That relationship continues through Avianca Costa Rica, its local employees and its flight network. For travelers in the United States, Avianca offers 11 weekly nonstop flights to San José: seven from Miami and four from Washington Dulles. According to the airline, approximately 50% of arriving passengers are tourists . In 2025, Avianca offered more than 2.1 million seats and operated approximately 11,000 flights to and from Costa Rica.
The airline’s presence is also reflected in its local workforce of more than 500 direct employees. Costa Rican crew members have been part of the service Avianca provides travelers over its decades of operations in the country.
“Being Orgullosamente Tica means much more than having a long history in Costa Rica. It means offering connectivity, creating local jobs, investing in the country and continuing to build opportunities alongside Costa Ricans,” said Viviana Martín, Country Officer of Avianca Costa Rica.“After more than 80 years, our commitment is to keep connecting Costa Rica with the continent and supporting its growth.”
Flying with purpose in Costa Rica
Avianca’s commitment to Costa Rica extends beyond air service. The airline received a 2024 Ecological Blue Flag award in the climate change category. Since February 2026, it has partnered with Fundación MarViva to provide flights for marine biologists and specialists who work with coastal communities on responsible fishing and marine governance.
In 2025, Avianca employees volunteered to plant 200 trees at Playa Guacalillo. The airline also supported AERIS’ “De Vuelta a Casa” initiative, which helps return seashells removed by visitors to their natural environment.
Lifemiles: More than 30 years in Costa Rica

Today, members in Costa Rica have access to more than 20 participating businesses, 10 Avianca Lifemiles credit card options for individual and business customers, and partnerships with three of the country’s major banks. The program’s growth has given members more ways to earn and use miles through everyday spending as well as travel.
